Personal Appearance and Finding Jobs
We all know that in today's world finding a job is really hard. People will go years constantly filling out applications and sending in resumes. We have to change so much about ourselves too just to find a good job. I saw a picture last night (http://28.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lg8flpAftJ1qh1whgo1_500.jpg) and it really got me thinking. Is it fair for a company to judge you on how you dress or how many tattoos you have. I have big holes in my ears (stupid idea), and I know that it's going to affect how people look at me if I still have them when I go get a job. I've also been dying to get a tattoo, but that will just lower my chances. There are a lot of people out there that get thrown under the bus because of personal experiences they make, and to me that's not fair at all. I would have never have though that the guy in the picture was a doctor, and that is sad that I too judged him off of his appearance. I think that so many qualified people are being tossed out the window which is disappointing. Companies and employers need to start realizing that they are in for a big wake up. Our generation is expressing itself physically more than any other generation in the past. Tattoos, guys with piercings, and anything else that is considered unprofessional are becoming more common now. What do you think? Should we clean ourselves up to get a job? Or should we be able to do whatever we want with how we look?

we have come a long way since the 50's and 60's where everyone was supposed to be conservative and if you had a skirt above the knees or your hair not combed, you were disgracing your family or whatever. We are not perfect by any means but i believe that people have forgotten that. We are human and we need to express ourselves because this is the world we live in now. Colors are encouraged and difference is accepted. I think when the older generations have gone through the work force and retire then maybe the work force itself will change its acceptance levels with new enforcers.
ReplyDeleteBut i do believe that their is a boundary where we need to stay for our professional areas. Such as, cleavage and underwear should not be showing, vulgar or hurtful tattoos should not be seen where they will be interpretted in a bad way.
I somewhat agree with you. I feel that there will always be those people that judge others with tattoos or piercings but those people also judge others that don't have them. I think that there is a job and place for both types of people and honestly I don't think that may people do discriminate against them, businesses just want to maintain a certain standard and reputation thus, normally, having them remove the piercings during the hours they are there or just covering visible tattoos.
ReplyDeleteI think that is so crazy, its so sad that everybody is so judgmental. I looked at that picture and I instantly felt bad because I would have never thought that the guy in the picture is a doctor. I agree with ann we should be able to express ourselves but to a certain degree. I feel like if people could get jobs regardless of their looks, people would go overboard.!
ReplyDeleteI think that those things are fine on a person as long as when they are in a work place that they are not shown because some people do not feel comfortable with seeing those things. Looking neat and clean is what most people want and thats why some employers say that if you have a tattoo that they are covered up at work.
ReplyDeleteGoing into a job interview I think that one should dress professionally even if it's only a fast-food job. I have 2 tattoos but mine can be covered up easily. However, I do have two facial piercings (nose and lip). I have yet to have a job interview with my lip ring so I am curious to see how they will respond to that. I like individuality and I do not think that someone should be judged based on their appearance with regards to piercings or tattoos. If they are clean, dress appropriately, and are kind to others, they should get the job. I think they should be able to leave in their piercings if they are just little studs that aren't obnoxious.
