Waiting for Superman

Today in class we watched Waiting for Superman and it was about education and  how flawed our system has been.  I agree with Mr. Canada that our education system is flawed and needs fixed for the students and for the teachers.  To fix this problem first the teachers unions need to be dissolved.  Unions were great when teachers were being unfairly treated ,but now there is no need for them and they are holding up progress of making education better in America.  Tenure needs to be rid of for teachers, because the bad teachers hide behind it and don't give it their all to students which creates a bad atmosphere in the classroom and in the school.
In the movie it talked about dropout factories and how there are so many of them in the united states. To get rid of the dropout factories states need to evaluate the schools and get rid of the bad teachers and equip the school with supplies and update the building.   States need to close down the schools that have schools that are falling apart and the schools that have low scores on tests and build new schools that give the students the chance to have a new start and better teachers.  Private schools have an advantage over public schools because they have their own rules and can hire the best teachers.

  1. This is my second time watching the documentary and it made me realize how lucky I am. I have gone to a public and a charter school, K-8 in public and 9-12 in charter and honestly I feel I was pushed and taught better in my charter school. It was either I go to a failing high school where fights break out everyday and wont learn as much or go to a charter school and be pushed. Personally I feel that charter schools are a great option because it has its own set of rules and eliminates that tenure teachers have in Public schools. Really, the whole education system needs to start over and just start from scratch. But in my perspective, not every school is going to succeed because of economic reasons and survival so there are going to be flaws.

  2. This documentary was really sad. I remember when I was that little and I wanted to be a veterinarian just like that little girl. I went to public school K-12 and I did about average. I know I could have done much better if I went to a charter school and got extra attention. My mom raised three girls and me and my sister were in the same grade so the price for my mother was double for everything. This just shows how this countries priorities are not straight and how educated every generation is the most important thing in this world. I liked the idea of getting rid of tenure and making teachers get evaluated every year to make sure they are doing their jobs.

  3. This documentary really opened my eyes to how corrupt the school systems are. I went to public school k-12 and even though I made it to college, I know that there are many students who didn't. I think tenure needs to be depleted. I myself knew many teachers that had tenure and they didn't teach us anything they just let us sit in class and talk. What was I really supposed to learn from that? At the time me and my classmates thought it was great because we didn't have to do anything but now that I really think about it I missed out on learning valuable information just because our teacher didn't feel the need to teach. It makes me upset to know that this is still going on in our school systems today. Something definitely needs to change.

  4. I understand the movie and that this is the PERSPECTIVE of what the director wants you to see. You cannot believe, honestly, that bad teachers are the ONLY reason for schools failing. Everyone needs to take into account other aspects of what could cause this result. I do agree that teachers hide behind tenure, however, i do not believe it should be abolished completely. Why would you want to make the good teachers suffer as well?? I think the process to getting tenure should be more strenuous, better structured, and selectively given instead of handed out.
Other aspects such as challenged students (Behavior disorders, Special Ed.) should be taken into account as well as poorly structured homes and broken homes.
bad teachers are not the only aspect to be blamed for low test scores in public school. I bet the charter schools have some teachers who are worse then the others, but they only showed what you wanted to see in the documentary.

  5. This documentary also opened up my eyes making me realize how our school system is ran and how the government is and isn't involved and what is really being done about it. The Government promises to work on the school systems and to improve them, but in the movie the part that blew me away was when the guy said that when the matter is brought up no one wants to talk about it. Because in a lot of peoples eyes there isn't much that you can do to fix it because if you try to make one area happy your making the other mad. I too feel lucky for how I was raised and where I was able to attend school and I feel so bad for school systems (like in the NY area) because I did not truly realize how bad their drop out rates and success rates where and how hard it truly is for the people in that area to succeed and get a good education in life.

  6. I strongly agree. I can't believe there are so many "teachers" in the US who get away with slacking. They obviously wanted to be a teacher for some reason since they went to school and got a degree for it so I don't know why they choose to not care about their students. I think the Tenure needs to go away. If teachers (without tenure) know that their job could be at risk if they do not perform well, I think they will try harder to keep their job. Our tax money is going towards those teachers sitting in that waiting room playing cards because they have tenure. Our tax dollars would be better spent on finding good teachers to teach the younger generation; people who love what they do, want to help others, and enjoy teaching.

  7. I agree that the teacher's union is now a problem. We are wasting our tax dollars on teachers who aren't performing as good as others. Education is crucial to any student's life and teachers hold the success. It is sad when my counselor recommend I take a course off campus because there is only 1 teacher at SIUE that teaches the course and his drop rate is 75%! He shouldn't be teaching then! No one is finding success in his class. I've heard he doesn't teach and that you literally teach yourself. Is that what a teacher is supposed to do? No.
